HOWDY FROM THE PRESIDENT………….
OMG how time flies, Summer is almost gone ….so soon? We hope you had a memorable
Summer with your kids and loved ones. Now we too are looking forward to the cooler weather when we can walk around our neighborhood and meet and visit with so many families and yes, even their dogs, plus we admire all the gorgeous trees.
This year has been a great year for our association. I am so fortunate to have a great team of such dedicated volunteers who sincerely devote their time and efforts to help make our
neighborhood a safe, peaceful, happy place to call home. Our social events have been a huge success. Such a joy to see to see so many happy kids and families especially at the Easter Egg Hunt and the July 4 Picnic.
Now that I have retired from TI, I finally have the time and have been concentrating on
developing a cordial relationship with City Staff and City Council members. Our sincere thanks to RPD Chief Spivey, Assistant Chief Dr. Pewitt, Mobilty/Traffic Director Mark Nelson for enhanced traffic control; City Manager Dan Johnson and his staff for the additional development funds for re-paving of Spring Valley, Grove and Abrams roads. I hope to convince them to approve more funds for our old infrastructure. Also sincere thanks to Dan Baker for taking such good care of our parks and new trees.
Please plan on attending our annual Fall Members Meeting on Saturday Oct.12
from 4 to 6 P.M. at the Presbyterian Church 271 Walton Street - Richardson 75081.
I would love to meet each one of you.
I have been on the HTNA Board for 21 years because I truly care about our neighborhood.
It has been an honor to serve as your President these last two years. Please join us and support us by becoming a member. The annual dues are only $15. Thank you and God Bless.
- Rahim B. Shaikh

AUGUST GARDENING TIPS FROM BRUCE MILLER NURSERY
August is the time to start getting ready for the Fall! (We can’t wait for fall.)
Now is the time to purchase fall vegetable transplants, perform fertilization and weed control for your
Bermuda lawn. It’s also time to plan for for any improvements/remodels in your home’s landscaping
and garden. Cooler temps are around the corner (we promise).
Fall Vegetables: Yes it’s time! Plant cucumbers, squash, corn and beans the first week, add
broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and brussel sprouts mid month and end the month by planting leafy
and root crops. (Come in to pick up your copy of Bruce Millers Vegetable planting dates!)
Annuals: Pentas, Angelonias…plant them in full sun in well-prepared soil to add color or revive the
Perennials: as these become available, start planting chrysanthemums, Fall Asters, Mexican Bush
Sage, Mexican mint Marigolds and bulbs such as lilies and crocus! Summer bloomers, like
periwinkles, are good choices for groundcover.
Shrubs: fill those empty spots in your landscape. Shrubs can provide color in your beds year round
thru their foliage. Container grown shrubs and trees can be planted at any time of year. You simply
have to give hand water them every 2-3 days to keep them looking their best.
Grass: Plant warm season grasses such as Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia, and Buffalo grass.
Water twice a day for the first 2–3 weeks. Remember, grass requires at least 4 hours of direct
sunlight a day to thrive!
Herbs: Who can resist the smell of rosemary in the air as you brush against it? Plant herbs
everywhere: in containers, in your vegetable or flower bed…anyplace they will have ample room to
grow and get sufficient sunlight.
Remove dead limbs and branches from trees. Use pruning sealer to seal cuts only on Oaks to
prevent the spread of Oak Wilt.
Reshape shrubs with a light pruning to remove erratic growth. Avoid shearing whenever possible.
Keep an eye out for spider mites.
Remove dead growth (flower heads, foliage, stems) from perennials and lanky, spindly stems from
annuals, such as impatiens, lantana, copper plants and coleus.
Fertilize Bermuda with a quality all Nitrogen fertilizer formulated for N. Texas clay soils. You can use
this same fertilizer on your trees, shrubs and flowering plants.
Here are some great tips on caring for your St. Augustine turf from the Texas Agricultural Extension
Mow at recommended heights so your grass will not be stressed by the summer heat! For healthy
lawns, St. Augustine should be mowed at 2 to 2.5 inches and Bermuda at 1.5 inches. Remember to
check the city watering schedule before you set out your sprinklers.
You can use a high Nitrogen fertilizer everywhere: Lawn, trees, shrubs, container plants, annuals,
perennials&emdash;just be sure it doesn’t contain a weed killer.
Add water soluble food to all container plants to keep them blooming.
Add iron/sulfur to any chlorotic plants (yellow leaves with dark green veins especially on new

In addition, as one of the catalysts for Main Street redevelopment, the city is nearing the completion of the new Public Safety Campus for the police headquarters and fire administration/Station 1.
Details related to the infrastructure project timelines, phasing, staging, traffic impacts, etc. can be found at www.cor.net/mainstreet. Residents and business owners can sign up for Main Street project updates on the website and follow the project on Facebook at @RichardsonRedevelopment.
